This course introduces both journalism majors and nonmajors to the digital media skills used in the journalism industry today.  If you are a journalism major, the skills learned will provide the building blocks as you continue on to higher level journalism courses such as broadcast, photojournalism and magazine editing.  If you are a nonjournalism major, it will provide skills that will be helpful in whatever career path you may follow.

The successful completion of this course will enable you to use Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition, WordPress, Final Cut Pro X, and Microsoft Excel to do the following:

  • Manage a blog using a Content Management System
  • Create simple graphics
  • Evaluate large datasets
  • Edit and manage digital photos
  • Design logos, magazine and newspaper layouts
  • Create and edit video packages
  • Create and manage a blog and website
  • Create audio packages and edit podcasts
  • Present graphics, audio and video projects on the web
  • Think critically about legal and ethical issues surrounding web publishing
  • Develop skills for analyzing resources online
  • Leap tall building at a single bound (just checking to see if you are reading this)
